Sun Papers Withdraw from Ontario Press Council

The chain that printed photos of the Duchess of Cambridge's behind says it will no longer play by its competitors rules.

Sun Media's 27 newspapers in Ontario are pulling out of the Ontario Press Council because they refuse to be held to their competitor's standards of political correctness. Effective immediately, the Sun papers, which include the Ottawa Sun and Toronto Sun, the London Free Press, the Kingston Whig-Standard, and a bunch of other mid- and small-market dailies, have withdrawn their membership in the watchdog group, which responds to complaints over content in Ontario newspapers. Sun executives said that they do not want to be “bound by the interpretations” of journalistic standards held by other members on the council, such as the Ottawa Citizen and The Globe and Mail, whose standards of reporting are clearly suspect.
