Because bullies didn't have enough reasons to pick on obese kids already.
An editorial in a leading American medical journal calls for parents of severely obese children to lose custody of them to help the kids lose weight. Dr. David Ludwig writes in the Journal of the American Medical Association that placing obese children in temporary foster care if their parents are unable to control their weight is a more ethical option than surgery or letting the children gain more weight. Ludwig, a childhood-obesity specialist, says he was inspired to write the article by a 400-pound 12-year-old girl whose parents were physically disabled and nearly broke. Extreme obesity has been a factor in a handful of recent child-protection cases in both the U.S. and the U.K.
