One of the Afghan capital's leading hotels is the scene of a battle between police and insurgents.

A hotel in Kabul popular with westerners and government officials is under attack by gunmen and suicide bombers, although the number of casualties so far is unknown. The Intercontinental Hotel, which overlooks Kabul from a hillside just outside the city, was hit by at least one suicide bomber who blew himself up on the main floor as night fell on the Afghanistan capital, but police say there could have been as many as six men strapped with explosives. Reports say a handful of police have been wounded in the assault, which included rocket-propelled grenades and a handful of gunmen storming the lobby. Attacks in Kabul are rarer than elsewhere in Afghanistan, particularly ones targeting such high-profile locations as the Intercontinental Hotel.
