Clock Ticking on Canada Post Strike

If CUPW and Canada Post fail to negotiate a deal, the striking workers could be forced to take the government's more austere offer.

Striking Canada Post employees have until tomorrow to hammer out a deal with their employer, or else a back-to-work bill will do it for them. The government's bill, which would force the 48,000 postal workers to take a deal that would see them get paid less than they would under Canada Post's current offer, is due to be voted on tomorrow. If it passes – and, with a Conservative majority government, there's no reason that it won't – the Canadian Union of Postal Workers says the average employee would lose out on nearly $900 over the next four years. The Conservative government maintains that the strike threatens the national economy, while the opposition parties say the union and management should be left alone to find a deal on their own.
