The actress who wore the iconic white dress had only $2,000 in her bank account when she died.

An anonymous bidder paid $5.6 million for Marilyn Monroe's iconic white "subway" dress at a Beverly Hills, Calif., auction on Saturday. The dress was part of a major collection belonging to actress Debbie Reynolds, who was in tears when the gavel sounded the winning price at $4.6 million after 20 minutes of bidding drama. The auction house receives a commission of $1 million. The pleated dress went billowing up over Monroe's legs in her famous scene standing atop a subway vent in the 1955 film The Seven Year Itch. The previous record for a Monroe dress was $1.26 million, which was paid for the revealing number the actress wore when she sang "Happy Birthday" to U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1962.
