A Canadian helicopter normally used for tourists led the rescue of two stranded officers.
Two American police officers were rescued by a Canadian helicopter when their boat became stranded at the brink of the Horseshoe Falls on Saturday. Officials said the New York State Police jetboat got lost in heavy fog on the Niagara River while out on another rescue mission. Uncertain how close they were to the Falls, the officers threw their anchor overboard and waited for help. It turns out they were a mere 274 metres from the edge. A helicopter from Niagara Helicopters led the rescue, a far cry from the chopper's usual role of giving tourists a bird's-eye view of the Falls. A Niagara Parks officer assisted with harnessing the stranded officers to the chopper. After four hours, the police officers were finally back on shore.
