The news from Afghan President Hamid Karzai came hours before suicide bombers killed nine people at a Kabul police station.
In the first confirmation from a high-level of government, Afghan President Hamid Karzai said Saturday the U.S. is engaged in peace talks with the Taliban. Karzai did not specify if Taliban officials were involved in the discussions with U.S. authorities, or whether they used a go-between instead. This news goes against the Taliban's official stance involving peace talks. They previously stated that they would not participate in peace talks until international forces leave Afghanistan, and that they would only speak to the Afghan government. Karzai's comments came hours before suicide bombers killed nine people, including three police officers, in an attack on a police station in Kabul.
