Congressmen to Sue White House for Libya Explanation

The 90-day deadline for military missions imposed by the War Powers Act looms this weekend.

American congressmen from both sides of the aisle intend to file a lawsuit against the Obama administration over the legality of U.S. involvement in the Libyan war. Representatives Dennis Kucinich, a Democrat, and Walter Jones, a Republican, are leading a group that wants President Barack Obama to explain if he intends to follow the War Powers Act and ask for congressional approval for continued action in Libya. The act gives the president 90 days to carry out a military operation without the OK from Congress. After that period is up – Sunday marks 90 days since the Libyan mission began on March 18 – the mission requires the approval of Congress for funds to carry out the war. The White House has said it's in the “final stages” of preparing an extensive report to Congress outlining the rationale and costs of the mission.
