Air Canada, Union Agree: Legislation Won't Help

The federal government's intent to end the Air Canada strike doesn't sit well with either party.

Air Canada and its 3,800 striking customer service employees might not agree on how to go forward with wages or pensions, but they're on the same page about one thing: Neither side is too keen about the federal government's plan to pass legislation to force the strikers back to work as early as tomorrow. Representatives from both the Canadian Auto Workers union, which represents ticket agents and call-centre staff, and Air Canada's management said they'd prefer to settle the labour unrest via negotiations. Labour Minister Lisa Raitt said Tuesday that she'd introduce a bill putting an end to the strike, which has caused flight delays across the country, as soon as Thursday.
