The Arizona congresswoman, who was shot in the head in January, could be released from her rehab facility this month.

The first photos of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords since she was shot in the head during a mass shooting in Tucson, Ariz., were released early Sunday. The two photos of the congresswoman, both of which feature her smiling, first appeared on her Facebook page. Although the photographs indicate how far Giffords has come in her recovery, her spokeswoman, Pia Carusone, has cautioned she still has a long road ahead of her. Since the shooting, Giffords has only been seen in public once, as she boarded a plane to Florida to watch her astronaut husband, Mark Kelly, launch into space. Giffords has been at a Houston rehab facility since two weeks after the Jan. 8 shooting, when six people were killed and 13 were injured. Carusone said Giffords could be released later this month.
