More Flooding for Manitoba

Fresh rains bring more misery to record-breaking flood season.
A major rainstorm predicted for Sunday could push Manitoba's Assiniboine River back to the record water levels it reached a few weeks ago. Authorities evacuated the area around the town of Souris of about 60 people Friday, where the river is expected to crest this month. Reopening the dike at the Hoop and Holler bend is a "possibility, not a probability," said Emergency Minister Steve Ashton. The dike had been intentionally cut back in May due to the pressure on protective dikes from the rising Assiniboine. This year's flooding is the worst on record, though precipitation in northern Manitoba is at a record low. Ashton noted that the north could soon be dealing with forest fires, even as the south struggles with flooding.
