Some $50 million was spent in Tony Clement's riding despite being meant for border issues.
An auditor general's report into spending at the G8/G20 summits last year found that the Conservatives never properly explained why $50 million was spent in then-industry minister Tony Clement's Ontario riding. The 32 projects, which were included under a fund meant to reduce congestion at the border, never received any approval from a bureaucrat, and were worth 10 times more than what areas hosting international summits typically receive in federal funding. The report, the final one released under recently retired Sheila Fraser's name, is somewhat less critical of the Conservatives' spending in the Muskokas than a draft report leaked during the federal election that hinted that the money could have been illegally dispensed.
