Students at an anti-homophobia awareness day at an Ontario school found a tasty way around the ban – rainbow cupcakes.
An Ontario Catholic high school has banned rainbows because of their association with the LGBT community. St. Joseph's Secondary School in Mississauga told the organizer of the school's unofficial gay-straight student alliance that posters featuring rainbows were forbidden from the club's anti-homophobia bullying day last week. The chair of the alliance, 16-year-old Leanne Iskander, then decided to bake rainbow cupcakes, which were sold for 50 cents apiece en route to raising $200. However, Iskander was told she couldn't donate the money to an LGBT charity and had to give it to a Catholic homeless outreach program. The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board, which includes Mississauga, has yet to comment on the ban.
