Happy IPv6 Day, Everybody!

An IP address trial run hopes to make sure we never, ever, ever, EVER run out of addresses again.

Around the world today, internet providers and online companies like Google and Yahoo! are trying out new IPv6 (internet protocol version six) addresses with 32 digits and letters instead of the regular 12 numbers. The trial is underway to see if the extended IP addresses can easily replace the current IPv4 addresses, which ran out of new number combinations in February after more than 4.3 billion had been distributed since the version's introduction in 1981. IPv6 allows for 340 undecillion, or 340 trillion trillion trillion, combinations – more than the number of grains of sand on the planet – and curious users can sign up for one today to see if their ISP is IPv6-friendly.
