A man on his way to work in downtown Montreal is now fighting for his life after being struck by a stray bullet.

Montreal police shot and killed a suspect but accidentally hit an innocent bystander as well, sending the 36-year-old man to hospital in critical condition. Police say the suspect was cutting open garbage bags with a knife in downtown Montreal this morning before being pursued by officers. After a brief foot chase, the officers say the man came at them with the knife, at which point they shot and killed the 40-year-old suspect. One of the bullets, however, strayed and hit a man who was on his way to work. The bystander was hit in his upper body and taken to hospital. The Sûreté du Québec, the provincial police force, is investigating the incident, as it does all cases of police-involved injury or death.
