Nearly 50,000 employees are walking off the job in the first countrywide postal strike since 1997.
Canada Post employees in Winnipeg were the first to hit the picket lines after the midnight deadline passed for reaching a new collective agreement. The Canadian Union of Postal Workers decided that Winnipeg would be the first location to strike because it is home to the first Canada Post facility where the mail service introduced its “modernization” program. Other Canada Post facilities will join in after the first 24 hours to bring mail delivery in Canada to a halt. Welfare, pension, and disability cheques will still be delivered, but the rest of the mail will be held back until CUPW and Canada Post can reach an agreement.
