Speaker of the House! Throne Speech! Question Period! Budgets!

The 41st Parliament will convene in the House of Commons today for the first time since last month's historic election. Among the first matters to be settled today will be voting for a new Speaker of the House since the last one, Peter Milliken, decided not to run for re-election. All MPs will vote in a secret ballot for one of the at least six members running for the new gig, with five Conservatives and one New Democrat having announced they'd run. The throne speech, which will outline the government's legislative agenda for the coming term, will be read by Gov. Gen. David Johnston on Friday, and the budget will be introduced Monday.
