The first countrywide strike since 1997 looks likely to begin as of midnight tonight.
All signs point to Canada Post employees going on strike as of midnight after the union and management failed to come to an agreement in last-ditch talks yesterday. The Canadian Union of Postal Workers said there were no plans for any more negotiations ahead of tonight's 11:59 p.m. deadline for strike action. If they follow through, all mail service, except for the delivery of social assistance, disability, and pension cheques, will be halted as CUPW's nearly 50,000 members would walk off the job. The two sides are a ways apart over wage increases, starting salaries, sick time, and benefits, or, in other words, just about everything.
