Mubarak's Trial Set for Aug. 3

The ousted ruler could be sentenced to death if found guilty of ordering the deaths of protesters.

Former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak and his two sons will go on trial in August for alleged corruption and their role in the deaths of hundreds of protesters. The trial is set to begin Aug. 3 in Cairo, provided the elder Mubarak is healthy enough, as he's been recovering in a hospital from a heart attack in April. If it's found that Mubarak was directly responsible for the deaths of protesters, as in ordering police to fire on them, he could face the death penalty. About 800 protesters died during the anti-government demonstrations that seized the country in January and February. The Mubarak family is also believed to have pilfered billions of dollars from state coffers during their patriarch's 30-year rule.
