The U.S. Embassy had first-hand knowledge of complaints about Ignatieff's leadership and Rae's lack of deference to his boss.

Tensions between Bob Rae and former Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff have been laid bare by U.S. diplomats in memos released by WikiLeaks. The dispatches from the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa include accounts of Rae, who's now the Liberals' interim leader, and Ignatieff at embassy functions, with the “better read and more substantive” Rae showing “little deference” to his boss during a 2009 lunch, dominating the conversation while Ignatieff stuck to “pleasantries and generalities.” Rae also told Ambassador David Jacobson in private that Ignatieff didn't consult enough with his caucus and made up his mind on his own too often.
