A fleet of aboriginal Canadians were highlighted during the ceremony for Canada's top civilian honour.
Guitar god Robbie Robertson and actor and Parkinson's disease activist Michael J. Fox are among the latest Canadians to receive the Order of Canada. Robertson was recognized for his contributions to Canadian music as the lead guitarist and principal songwriter for The Band, as well as his long and storied solo career. Fox, who rose to superstardom for his roles in Back to the Future, Teen Wolf, and the TV shows Family Ties and Spin City, was honoured not for his acting but for his relentless work in promoting awareness of Parkinson's disease, with which he was diagnosed in the 1990s. In total, Gov. Gen. David Johnston handed out 43 medals at Rideau Hall today to citizens from many fields, including hockey legend Howie Meeker and Mi'kmaq activist Donald Julien.
