Wikipedia Vies for UNESCO Status

The online, crowd-sourced encyclopedia, now a decade old, is making the case that it's worthy of the vaunted UN designation.

Should the UN add Wikipedia to its registry of World Cultural Heritage Sites? That's just what some members of the non-profit agency that runs the online encyclopedia are pushing for in calling on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, or UNESCO, to make Wikipedia the first digital entry to the list. The members say that Wikipedia represents the “greatest collection of human knowledge” on the planet, and is thus worthy of consideration to join such sites as the Great Pyramids, the Eiffel Tower, the Rideau Canal, and more than 700 other man-made sites that have made a lasting cultural impact. The organization has set up an online campaign for people to register their support for the initiative.
