As her term as auditor general wraps up, Sheila Fraser issues stern warnings over the country's finances.
Auditor general Sheila Fraser urged the federal government to seriously examine aboriginal issues and the aging population in her final public address as the nation's financial watchdog. Fraser also said that Parliament should make public its long-term financial projections to give Canadians a better idea of the challenges the country will face over the coming years. Few public servants have ever garnered the respect that Fraser has over her 10-year term, highlighted by her role in shedding light on the sponsorship scandal and countless other financial and procedural slip-ups in government over that decade. When she steps down on May 30, her deputy auditor, John Wiersma, will take over, while Prime Minister Stephen Harper advises Gov. Gen. David Johnston on whom to appoint as her successor.
