Never one to shy away from grandstanding, the French president opens the e-G8 forum with calls to corral the internet.
At the opening of the first ever e-G8 meeting, French President Nicolas Sarkozy has called for globally agreed-upon rules to govern the internet. Sarkozy said the internet cannot exist in some law-free, amoral universe detached from the rest of reality, but didn't get into specifics at the forum. France already has some of the toughest digital copyright laws in the world, prompting commentators to question Sarkozy's motives in calling for cohesive international web governance, ostensibly under the guidance of the G8. The two-day summit in Paris will also feature talks from the heads of Facebook, Google, Wikipedia, and many others.
