Caribana Can't Be Called Caribana: Judge

A dispute over the rights to North America's largest Caribbean festival will lead to a new name for Caribana.

A court has ruled that the organizers of Toronto's Caribana festival can't call it Caribana. The festival, one of the biggest in the country, is at the centre of a spat between two Caribbean arts foundations, one of which has run the festival since 2007, and another that owns the trademark for the name “Caribana.” An Ontario Superior Court judge ruled that the Festival Management Committee, which has successfully run, err, the festival of Caribbean culture for the past four years, never had permission from the Caribbean Arts Group to use the name, for which it has held a trademark for nearly 40 years. The CAG is reportedly asking for $250,000 for the use of the name “Caribana.” The FMC is to announce a new name on Wednesday.
