The monarch hopes to quell lingering bitterness toward the U.K. with her first-ever visit across the Irish Sea.
Queen Elizabeth II will be the first British monarch to visit the Republic of Ireland when she arrives on the Emerald Isle tomorrow. Her four-day trip will be guarded by a massive security detail of some 8,500 police officers due to concerns of bomb threats or violent protests over the Queen's visit. The last time a British monarch visited Ireland was more than 100 years ago when the country was still a British possession. Anti-monarchic sentiment is still high in Ireland, but the Queen is expected to lay a wreath at the memorial in Dublin for the rebels who beat out the British during Ireland's war for independence.
