Forward Derek Boogaard was one of the most feared players in the NHL.

Saskatoon native Derek Boogaard, a 28-year-old forward with the New York Rangers, was found dead in his Minneapolis apartment on Friday. In a statement, Rangers president and general manager Glen Sather called Derek "an extremely kind and caring individual" and someone "who will be dearly missed by all those who knew him." No other details about the death were given. Boogaard, who was picked by the Minnesota Wild in the 2001 draft, was one of the most feared enforcers in the league and had signed a four-year, $6.5-million contract with the Rangers last July. His passing is the second death of a player in the Rangers organization in the past three years.
