The Iberian peninsula suffers its deadliest earthquakes in more than 40 years.

Two earthquakes in Spain killed at least 10 people in the city of Lorca today. The magnitude 4.4 and 5.2 quakes injured dozens and shook buildings throughout the southeastern region of Murcia, covering streets in rubble. A hospital in Lorca had to be evacuated after the second quake over concerns that the building was no longer structurally sound. The quakes occurred near a large fault line along the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea where the African and European tectonic plates meet. The most deadly earthquakes in Spain since 1969, they were felt in Madrid, more than 300 kilometres away, as well as in Cordoba and Valencia.
