Rules would stipulate the interim leader couldn't run for the full leadership next year.
The Liberal Party of Canada won't jump headfirst into a new leadership race now that consultations with party members have overwhelmingly revealed they just want to take it slow after the Michael Ignatieff era. The party's brass has also produced a framework for finding an interim leader that would require him or her to have the support of half of the party's 34 MPs and would prevent the person from running for the full-time leadership. If Bob Rae's sights are as set as everyone says they are on taking control of the party, these rules would bar him from becoming the interim leader. An online “virtual” convention to be held in June will seek to have the leadership convention moved back from October to sometime next year.
