The government alleges the World Islamic Call Society was used as a front by the Libyan leader to funnel money to terrorists worldwide.
The Canadian government is revoking the registration of the World Islamic Call Society, a London, Ont.-based charity, saying it was established as a front by Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi to direct money to terrorists. According to government documents, the Canadian charity transferred hundreds of thousands of dollars to known terrorists, including a Muslim militant cell connected to a 2007 plot to bomb New York's JFK airport. In the scheme, money was first wired in U.S. funds to the personal bank account of Assem Fadel, then transferred to the bank account of the World Islamic Call Society’s Canadian branch, before being distributed to known terrorist organizations. Fadel said the allegations are "unbelievable" and that most of the Gadhafi money was used for conferences held to properly explain the Muslim faith.
