A U.S. drone strike fails to kill the Yemeni head of al-Qaeda, Anwar al-Awlaki, on Thursday.

A U.S. drone attack in Yemen failed to assassinate Anwar al-Awlaki, a cleric and the head of al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, just days after al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was killed in Pakistan by U.S. Navy Seals. However, Yemeni officials confirmed that two brothers, Musa'id and Abdullah Mubarak, who are believed to be mid-ranking al-Qaeda officials, died in the strike. Despite the Pentagon's refusal to confirm if the mission's target was al-Awlaki, an unnamed U.S. official told CBS News: "We were hoping it was him." This is the first known U.S. attack within Yemen since May 2010.
