The province has the strongest job market in Canada, creating 15,000 jobs in the last year.
Newfoundland and Labrador's job market is outpacing the rest of the country, according to figures released Friday by Statistics Canada. The eastern province's job growth increased 6.9 per cent, well above the national rate of 1.7 per cent. This means the jobless rate in St. John's sits at just 5.7 per cent, while Vancouver and Toronto are far behind at 8.4 and 8.5 per cent, respectively. Newfoundland has been heavily supported by offshore energy resources, but the recent job surge has been helped by natural resources, including fishing and forestry, which added 2,000 workers. Construction, manufacturing, and public administration also saw big gains. The province created 15,000 jobs in the past year, and unemployment is 11.1 per cent, the lowest level since at least 1976, when records were first kept.
