The Liberal leader has stepped down after his party received an electoral thrashing last night.
Michael Ignatieff announced his resignation as leader of the Liberal Party of Canada this morning, fresh off of losing his Toronto-area seat and the party's worst-ever electoral showing. A night after the Liberals were reduced from 77 to 34 seats in the House of Commons, Ignatieff told a press conference that he was stepping down and that deputy leader Ralph Goodale would be tasked with getting the much smaller caucus together to select an interim leader. Ignatieff, who was a professor at Harvard University before joining the Liberals, said he'd like to continue teaching at a Canadian university.
