Canadians were barely able to eclipse the lowest-ever turnout from 2008, when 59 per cent of citizens voted.
Voter turnout for the federal election increased from 2008, but only marginally. As of Tuesday morning, Elections Canada was reporting that 60 per cent of eligible voters cast ballots, up from just 59 per cent three years ago. A record-setting advance-poll turnout last weekend led many to believe that droves of Canadians would be out on May 2 for what proved to be one of the biggest nights in Canadian electoral history. While numbers for the youth vote have yet to be released for this election, Canadians between the ages of 18 and 24 would be hard-pressed to vote in lower numbers than they did in 2008, when only 37 per cent took part in the most essential of civic duties.
