Rights Group Sues for Fraser to Release G8/G20 Report

Well-known petitioners from Avaaz hope their lawsuit will be heard before the election.

A democratic rights group is filing a lawsuit in Federal Court with the hope of forcing auditor general Sheila Fraser to release the final draft of her report on the G8/G20 summits last year. Avaaz, an online activist organization known for circulating petitions, has garnered 80,000 signatures in support of the release of the report ahead of the May 2 election. Two weeks ago, a draft report was leaked alleging that $50 million had been improperly dispensed in Industry Minister Tony Clement's riding, which hosted the G8 meeting. A later draft, obtained by the Tories, took out the most damning sentences, but Fraser's decision to hold back the report's release until after the election has left a dearth of information on a vital issue of the election campaign.
