A classified Pentagon memo obtained by WikiLeaks links a Montreal mosque to the terrorist organization.
A Montreal mosque was one of nine around the world that U.S. officials deemed to be a top al-Qaeda recruiting centre, according to Pentagon memos released by WikiLeaks. The Al Sunnah Al Nabawiah Mosque was visited by a number of men in the late 1990s who would later be detainees at Guantanamo Bay. The most prominent among them was Mohamedou Ould Salahi, an alleged Mauritanian al-Qaeda leader who the memo says planned the foiled millennium bombing targeting Los Angeles International Airport. Salahi has been held at Guantanamo since 2002, but he has denied any connection to the terrorist organization. The Montreal mosque was the only one in North America on the list of places of worship that “recruited, facilitated, or trained” al-Qaeda members.
