A poll projects that the NDP will have an unprecedented showing in the House of Commons, while the Grits could hit an all-time low.
A smattering of recent polls have put the New Democratic Party ahead of the Liberals across the country for the first time, but one released by EKOS Research this week found that Jack Layton's party could win as many as 100 seats in the May 2 election. Although the Grits are projected to tumble to 62 seats – one of their worst showings ever – the two parties could govern as a majority coalition if the poll holds true. The EKOS poll had the Tories at 33.2 per cent support, followed by the NDP at 28 per cent (its highest ever), and the Liberals at 23.7 per cent. The NDP's overnight popularity comes largely at the expense of the Liberals and the Bloc Québécois, which could be steamrolled into irrelevancy this election by a big orange machine.
