Omar Khadr was kept at Guantanamo Bay for so long partly because of the knowledge he had on insurgent activities.

Classified memos on the prisoners held at Guantanamo Bay revealed that Canadian citizen Omar Khadr was held there for nearly a decade partly because of how much he knew about insurgent operations in Afghanistan. A 2004 memo obtained by WikiLeaks said Khadr, who was 15 when he was captured on an Afghan battlefield after a firefight with U.S. soldiers, readily gave “key” information to interrogators on al-Qaeda and Taliban operatives, training camps, and other organizations linked to the Afghan insurgency. The same memo said Khadr admitted to throwing a grenade that killed a U.S. soldier, a charge to which he pleaded guilty last year. Khadr faces one more year in Guantanamo before being shipped to Canada.
