The Japanese gaming giant will debut a prototype of the as-yet-unnamed follow-up to the Wii at June's E3 conference.

Nintendo confirmed on Monday that it will launch a second Wii gaming console as early as next year. No name has been released, nor have many details, but the rampant popularity of the Wii – a motion-sensing console that's stoked interest in gaming in all sorts of non-traditional demographics – all but ensures the Japanese entertainment company will strike gold once again. Nintendo said it should have a prototype of the console on display in time for June's Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles. Since its release in November 2006, the original Wii has dominated the console market, selling 86 million units worldwide – markedly more than its rivals, Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 3.
