The rookie political party fires a shot across the bow of Tory proposals to increase internet monitoring.
The Pirate Party of Canada, running in its first federal election, unveiled one of the campaign's most innovative policies today: Starting in June, Canadians can buy a virtual private network, which would allow them to browse the internet free of monitoring and censorship. The accounts will cost $10 for 200 gigabytes per month, and for each account purchased in Canada, the party will set up a free account in countries with restricted internet access such as China or Tunisia. Pirate party Leader Mikkel Paulson, running in Edmonton Centre, said the proposal was a response to the Conservative party's promise to pass a crime omnibus bill that would create new powers for police to get customer data from ISPs.
