Research In Motion's answer to the iPad hasn't exactly set the world on fire, but don't expect them to stay on shelves too long.

Research In Motion's new touchscreen tablet, the BlackBerry PlayBook, goes on sale across Canada and the U.S. this morning amid mixed reviews for the product meant to rival Apple's iPad lineup. Technology reviewers have uniformly criticized the PlayBook, retailing for between $499 and $699, for not having enough apps, as it doesn't have programs for email, a calendar, or address books. The tablet does boast a more powerful processor and a better camera and resolution than the iPad, and stores are expecting to sell out of PlayBooks quickly. Waterloo, Ont.-based RIM's business-oriented clientele have been loyal to the BlackBerry brand in the past; now we'll find out if they're willing to overlook a few cranky reviewers.
