Documents show that Ottawa will be on the hook to provide engines for the new fighter jets.

According to recently released Defence Department documents, the multi-million-dollar F-35s the Conservatives want so badly comes with everything a high-tech aircraft should have--except for an engine. The government will be required to provide the engines for the expected 65 planes, even though it's unclear how much the engines will cost or if there will be an additional expense to install them. Already the proposed purchase of the fighter jets is estimated at $14-$29 billion. However in an e-mail late Friday, the DND did state that Canada is purchasing the least costly variant of the F-35.
