UNICEF says it has received reliable reports that children are being deliberately killed in the city of Misrata.
The humanitarian situation in Misrata is dire. The last rebel-held city in the western half of Libya, the town has been under siege for 40 days by forces loyal to Moammar Gadhafi and residents are running out of food and water. UNICEF spokesperson Marixie Mercado told reporters in Geneva Friday that the agency has received “reliable and consistent reports of children being among the people targeted by snipers in Misrata.” Since the Libyan uprising began, Gadhafi’s soldiers have employed sniper fire as a means of terrorizing the population and keeping people off the streets. Meanwhile, NATO is refusing to apologize for an air strike that killed at least four rebel soldiers on the road to Misrata Thursday.
