A new poll shows 46 per cent of registered Republicans in the state favour banning mixed marriages.
What year is this again? A poll conducted by the Public Policy Poll group has found racism is alive and well in the most conservative state in the U.S., with nearly half of registered Republicans not only believing interracial marriage is wrong, but that it should be illegal. The poll found 40 per cent of Republicans thought mixed marriage should be legal, and 14 per cent were unsure. With the GOP still searching for a presidential candidate for the 2012 election, those who wanted interracial marriage banned favoured Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, Sarah Palin, and Mike Huckabee as potential presidents. About 37 per cent of Mississippi residents are black.
