West Coast Canadians aren't exactly thrilled about tentative plans to consolidate navy command 5,000 km away in Nova Scotia.
The Canadian Forces are debating whether to move command of the navy's Pacific fleet from Victoria to Halifax, home to Canada's largest naval base. Some senior officers are reportedly protesting the move, as it would mean the loss of top jobs in Victoria, while others say it would streamline operations in a time of supposed budgetary restraint and when naval missions — such as in Libya or in aid missions to Haiti — are increasingly focused on the Atlantic side. The 14 ships stationed at CFB Esquimalt in Victoria would likely stay on the West Coast. Nothing is official yet, but the plans are expected to be finalized by June.
