The company has been given the green light one year after causing the worst oil spill in U.S. history.
Despite being found responsible by a presidential commission for the disaster that killed 11 people and dumped 757 million litres of oil into the ocean, BP is set to resume its operations in the Gulf of Mexico. A moratorium was imposed on BP’s Gulf drilling after the catastrophic April 20, 2010 blowout on the Deepwater Horizon rig, but it will be lifted on the condition that BP adhere to strict safety measures and allow the U.S. government 24-hour access to its facilities. The company intends to resume drilling on 10 existing oil wells this summer. Meanwhile Transocean, the company operating Deepwater Horizon at the time of the spill, announced it had awarded its executives bonuses for the company’s safety record.
