The company has altered the description of its controversial bathing suit, but is still selling the item.
Here’s hoping an advertising exec got fired over this. Someone working at Abercrombie and Fitch got the bright idea to market a padded bikini top designed for girls as young as seven as a “push-up” top, prompting vicious backlash on the internet from those saying the company was attempting to sexualize pre-pubescent girls. The clothing retailer, notorious for its steamy ads, appears to have partially caved, and has changed the description of the swimsuit to a “triangle top.” But for many, the bikini is only the latest example of retailers inappropriately targeting young girls with sexualized products. Wal-Mart has come under fire for selling makeup for tweens, and many were outraged by the debut of high heels for toddlers.
