But the alliance is divided over the prospect of taking control of the entire Libya intervention.
NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen has announced that the organization will take responsibility for enforcing a no-fly zone over Libya within days. The decision will take some of the heat off U.S. President Barack Obama, who has been at pains to brand the mission as a multilateral effort rather than yet another U.S. attack on a Muslim country, despite the fact that 168 of the 175 missiles that have pounded Libya in recent days have been launched by the U.S. military. But Rasmussen said NATO leaders have not yet decided to manage the wider Libya mission, which includes bombing Moammar Gadhafi’s military on the ground. They may yet agree to do so, but it is believed NATO member Turkey has raised concerns about the bombings.
