The Libyan leader is attempting to create a buffer zone around his stronghold in Tripoli.
Information coming out of Libya remains spotty, but reports indicate violent clashes in the eastern city of Brega, which has been held by rebels but may have been re-captured Wednesday by pro-Gadhafi forces. In the country’s northwest, the strategic oil towns of Gharyan and Sabratha have also reportedly been taken by Gadhafi’s supporters. Gadhafi took to the airwaves again Wednesday to deliver another baffling speech, in which he denied there was any unrest in his country but also vowed to fight to the death. He said that thousands of Libyans would die if the U.S. or NATO intervened. Several U.S. Navy warships carrying marines passed through the Suez Canal and into the Mediterranean in order to be closer to Libya.
