An unprecedented number of parties are being helmed by female leaders.
It’s a good time to be a lady in provincial politics. When Christy Clark is sworn in as B.C. premier this month, she will join a growing number of women at the top of provincial parties. Chief among them is Danielle Smith, whose Wildrose Alliance has been a major game-changer in Alberta, but in Newfoundland and Labrador, Premier Kathy Dunderdale’s is facing off against two women in the NDP’s Lorraine Michael and the Liberals’ Yvonne Jones. The B.C. Green Party and the NDP are also led by women, as is the Ontario NDP. Federal politics remains a different story, however. Only the Green Party is led by a woman – Elizabeth May – who has never been elected.
